Tutankhamun Gallery at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Closes on October 20 for Artifact Transfer to Grand Egyptian Museum
In anticipation of the Grand Egyptian Museum’s (GEM) grand opening on November 1, 2025, the Tutankhamun Gallery at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will close on October 20. This closure marks the final phase in relocating the legendary treasures of the “Golden King” to their new home at the GEM.
For the first time ever, all over 5,000 artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun will be displayed in one dedicated hall at the GEM, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the full legacy of one of ancient Egypt’s most iconic rulers.
Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, confirmed that while the Tutankhamun Gallery will be closed, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will remain open to the public during regular hours. The closure only affects the Tutankhamun exhibition, which is undergoing its final packing and transfer to the GEM.
“This is a monumental moment in archaeological history,” Dr. Khaled stated. “Bringing the entire collection of Tutankhamun under one roof will provide an unprecedented opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the legacy of the young pharaoh through an extraordinary and comprehensive display.”
In addition to the Tutankhamun Gallery closure, the Grand Egyptian Museum will temporarily close from October 15 to prepare for its inauguration. The GEM is set to reopen on November 4, 2025, coinciding with the 103rd anniversary of Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.
Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming GEM opening and the historic Tutankhamun exhibit.
